Piani Di Bobbio. A 25-minute car ride from the city of Lecco , Piani di Bobbio is a great ski resort for a family and/or for beginners. The slopes are long and flat. If you want to stay near the slopes the closest town would be Barzio where the cable car leaves from. There are also areas for sledding and snowboarding. The route starts at Colonno and ends at Griante. So many people go to Italy and skip this place for the more touristy places such as Lake Como, Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast, but we have been to all 4 and this Lake might be our favourite! Earl, My suggestion would be either Lago di Como or Lago Maggiore. Lago di Garda has it's charms but only the south end is served by rail service (Peschiera del Garda and Desenzano), and you'd need to travel by car, bus or ferry to reach towns on the north end, such as Malcesine or Limone sul Garda.
